Inclusive Leadership: Parliamentary Perspectives on Gender Representation in Politics

Gender equality is the number 5 goal of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, yet, despite the increasing adoption of measures aimed at reducing the representation gap, we keep witnessing gender pay gaps, underrepresentation of women in the labour market, and women in executive and leadership roles are not yet the new normal. This is especially true in politics, where exclusionary dynamics carry on, with critical consequences for the quality of decision-making and the creation of inclusive political environments.

This dialogue was an opportunity for policymakers to explore the topic of inclusive leadership and equal representation in political institutions. During the conversation, participants shared their own views on the topic and learned from other national and parliamentary perspectives.

Policymakers were joined by Costanza Hermanin, Research Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), and Jonathan Malloy, holder of the Honorable Dick and Ruth Bell Chair in Parliamentary Democracy at Carleton University (Canada).

The activity took place, on Monday, 22 May 2023, from 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST).

OED120 POLICY DEEP-DIVES

The OED120 Policy Deep-Dive format allows parliamentarians to receive a concise briefing, ask questions to an expert and discuss, with colleagues, a narrowly defined topic during a 120-minute video call. The OED provides professional facilitation to extract the most value out of the discussions. Policymakers get the chance to share their perspectives with their colleagues while having topic expertise on hand for questions and clarifications. Topics are chosen as they emerge through other network activities as ripe for a more in-depth discussion, or they are suggested by members of the network, or flagged by the network of OED researchers and experts. MP network members can initiate these calls and volunteer their expertise on a topic of their choosing.
